Rotten egg smell in well water: what it usually means

Sulfur odors are a common private-well complaint. Treatment starts with testing—not a one-size municipal package.

Odor is its own problem

A “rotten egg” smell is often linked to sulfur compounds in private well water. It is a different issue from municipal chlorine taste and from hardness scale. A softener alone is not a guaranteed fix for odor, and carbon selected for city chlorine is not automatically the right media for every well.

SpenceCo provides residential well-water filtration and softening recommendations after an in-home visit. That visit looks at water at the taps and where equipment would go. It does not certify that well water is safe to drink, and it is not a full laboratory analysis of every contaminant.

Treatment vs. well contracting

Household treatment equipment addresses water quality after the supply enters the home. Regulated water-well contracting such as pump repair or drilling is separate and is not currently advertised on this site.

Well-water systems are quoted separately. Municipal recommendations and pricing do not automatically apply.
